What is the NDIS? - And Other Relevant FAQs

If you or someone you love have any disability, you may be eligible for support under the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme). This blog will help to answer many of the queries you may have about eligibility, applying, and your options under the NDIS.

What is the NDIS?

The NDIS delivers funding support to Australians living with a disability, and it is overseen by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

How does the NDIS work?

The NDIS ensure that Australians with a disability can access care and support, regardless of location. This funding is provided directly to individuals with a disability.

What are the eligibility requirements for NDIS support?

All Australian residents between the ages of 7 and 65 are eligible for NDIS support. Those outside the ages of 7 and 65 may be eligible for support under another scheme.

How to apply for NDIS support?

To apply for NDIS support, you can either call 1800 800 110 or complete an online Access Request Form and submit it to the NDIS. If you need extra help applying, you can contact your local area coordinator or NDIA office.

Is the NDIS means tested?

The NDIS doesn't stand for tested and doesn't affect other types of support, such as the disability support pension or carers allowance.

What does the NDIS support entail?

The NDIS entails support, such as:

  • Assistance with self-care activities in Australia
  • Therapeutic supports
  • Household assistance
  • Mobility equipment and vehicle modifications
  • Workplace assistance managing your employment
  • Transport to and from the social, community, and daily activities

The support not covered by the NDIS contains things covered by another support or not related to your disability needs.

Does the NDIS cover psychiatry?

The NDIS does not fund clinical support from a mental health professional. Other health services usually fund this type of support. However, the NDIS may support you with associated costs, including making it to psychiatry/psychology appointments.

Does the NDIS cover prescription glasses?

Prescription glasses are not covered by the NDIS but by the health system.

How to get an NDIS plan?

If you have an 'access decision letter' approving your access to the NDIS, the next stage is making your plan. Everyone's plan is different, based on:

  • How are you doing in your life
  • Any plans you would like to pursue
  • What kinds of support do you require

The NDIS will arrange a meeting with you to discuss these questions and help form your plan.
